Feed-a-Gene aims to better adapt different components of monogastric livestock production systems (i.e., pigs, poultry and rabbits) to improve the overall efficiency and to reduce the environmental impact. This involves the development of new and alternative feed resources and feed technologies, the identification and selection of robust animals that are better adapted to fluctuating conditions, and the development of feeding techniques that allow optimizing the potential of the feed and the animal.

There are two main objectives with A Living Lab for Smart Pig farming (ALL-SMART-PIGS), where in total 4 farms will participate (2 in Hungary and 2 in Spain):
    1. To demonstrate the technical and economic viability of precision livestock farming technologies in European pig farming.
    2. To establish of Living Lab infrastructure for bringing innovative Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) technologies to European livestock farmers.

Dairy farming has adopted automatic milking (AM) at an accelerating rate for reasons such as improvement in lifestyle, less physical work, attracting skilled labour and increased profitability (higher milk production, lower labour costs). Up to now, indoor feeding systems have been well adapted to AM, however grazing has not, leading to a decrease in grazing on AM farms. Grazing has many advantages for economy, environment, animal welfare and product quality, so it is essential that integrated grazing and AM dairy systems are developed.

The main goal is to optimise the feeding strategy for grazing cattle and to improve the methods of pasture management. An in the frame of the project developed pasture robot and a modified automatic grazing system (AGS) will be integrated into existing herd management software (HMS), providing an optimal feeding strategy for cattle and pasture maintenance. A robot will be redesigned and sensors for detection of biomass, cowpats etc. and actuators, a mulcher and a seeder, will be implemented.
